11:00 am Rutu Parekh Jet Propulsion Laboratory Small-scale surface degradation features: Journey from inner to outer solar system
Abstract: From asteroids to icy planetary surfaces, a variety of landscape degradation features—such as pits, troughs, and mass-wasting deposits—are commonly observed. Despite the diverse environments, some of these geomorphic features exhibit striking similarities across bodies like Vesta and Ceres (located within the asteroid belt), as well as Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto (in the outer solar system). This overlap suggests that shared geological processes may be at play, potentially influenced by factors like impact gardening, cryovolcanism, sublimation, and tectonics. By leveraging high-resolution remote sensing imagery and topographic datasets, and comparative geology of these bodies, the study offers valuable insights into surface evolution processes that shape both rocky and icy worlds across the solar system.
